Abhaya - Committed to Protect

Aarti VFT and WINs with financial assistance from European Commission are jointly working in Kadapa and Chittoor Districts to support, protect and empower the women Human Rights Defenders (wHRDs). This project named Abhaya - meaning "committed to protect" is being executed from Jan 2018 to June 2020. #Abhaya created 117 coalition groups (1 in each mandal), with active participation from the grass root wHRDs like ASHA, ANM, Anganwadi workers, MPVs, students, lawyers, NGos, Self Help Goups and journalists. This group holds a monthly meeting to identify, discuss and resolve the issues related to women's rights (and those of wHRDs) with help from Mandal Level officers. #Abhaya has also setup a helpline for victims and wHRsDs to which they call and get immediate suggestions on how to proceed with their cases. In these 2 districts, #Abhaya has established 6 Open Resource Centers (ORCs), designed as "Discrimination free zones" , where women are encouraged to be for themselves, learn about their rights, learn how to become a leader and to get in touch similar wHRD coalitions in the world and share their good experiences. #Abhaya

has published on Play store an andriod app named ABHAYA, for women to quickly refer and know their rights #know_your_rights. A booklet on Legal awareness about women's rights is also published and is distributed free of cost among the coalition members.

#Abhaya intends to provide legal awareness to 48,000 college students in these two districts and 5000 wHRDs. It also intends to inculcate leadership qualities in these 5000 wHRDs, through workshops and seminars.

#Abhaya has also setup a safe house to safe guard the wHRDs when they are in grave danger.

Through social media like face book, twitter and instagram,, #Abhaya intends to spread legal awareness by posting #know_your_rights
