Abhaya, meaning committed to protect, is a European Union funded project being implemented jointly by Vijay Foundation Trust, Kadapa and Women's Initiatives, Tirupaty in Kadapa and Chittoor Districts of Andhra Pradesh with an objective to protect women's rights by creating wHRD (women's Human Rights Defenders) coalitions (and strengthening them to protect theirs and others rights). Project Abhaya has created 117 such wHRD coalitions (one in each mandal of these 2 districts). Abhaya has also appointed 12 counselors who coordinate with these coalitions. These wHRD coalitions are formed from the grass root workers like ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activists), ANMs (Auxiliary Nursing Midwifery), MPVs (Mahila Police Volunteers), student leaders, religious leaders, village leaders and other influential persons. The reason for selecting people from these groups is that each of these persons has easy access to the communities and can identify the problems related to women's rights violation. These coalition members meet every month to discuss the identified issues and seek solution thereof. The counselor will mobilize the resources required for these meetings. Government officers from the Revenue, police, medical and education departments attend these meetings as observers and provide authentic solutions to the identified issues. The group also meets in emergency situations with the same purpose and take the issues to the concerned Government officials for resolution.
These coalition groups have become very popular and during the year 2018, these groups received 125 cases out of which 71 cases have been resolved amounting to 57%. Most of these cases relate to Domestic Violence followed by cases related to women's property issues.
